Below, the third and final article in Matrix Security’s ‘Our People in Focus’ series, continues Daniel Walters’ story to-date of new beginnings in the security industry, initial expectations – and reality, and the ever-evolving nature of his work which provides opportunities to foster new skills, carve new career pathways and hone a people-centric focus. Here, Daniel shares snippets of a-day-in-his-life and the challenges, rewards and critical mindset that all make up his role.

Responding to situations beyond break ins and security breaches is something Daniel Walters, Matrix Security’s Operations Manager for Waitemata, attends to regularly, but it’s the positive spin of actively help people facing dire situations that he holds fast to.

“I recently had a situation where I was flagged down by an occupant at one of the housing sites whilst out on patrol, and this person was obviously in distress – there was no one else around the premises – and I could see they were very anxious, upset and agitated,” explains Daniel.

“So, I stopped and the person informed me of the violent situation unfolding at the site. I was able to keep control of the situation, calm the person down, call the police, wait for them to arrive – and assist. What was an ugly situation ended as well as it could have and I came away knowing that I really helped someone get through an incident on my watch – it’s a good feeling.”

The robust teamwork infrastructure within Matrix Security, resonates with Daniel. Having the full support of everyone in the workplace – which prioritises training, and investment in its people, providing them with the skills to succeed – has made his transition into a new career seamless, and continues to help his advancement within the company.

“When you’re on patrol and come across an incident, you have to think instantly. Critical thinking is invaluable and game change for what’s unfolding. You need to possess that skillset in order to assess quickly, “How can I diffuse the situation? How can I keep our people and our clients safe? What is the best course of action here for all concerned?

Alongside a focus on the customer and communication, it’s having that passion and pride in your role that that keeps you centered, says Daniel.
“Matrix provide you with the tools to succeed, you’re actively helping people – this drives you to be the best in your role and do the best by your team.”
